Leopards News · Fall Sport Statement From Athletic Director’s

July 23, 2020

The following is a joint statement from the Athletic Directors at Central High School, Hernando High School, Nature Coast Technical High School, Springstead High School and Weeki Wachee High School.

This release offers further clarification and details to the previously released statement by the Hernando County School District.

The FHSAA Sports Medicine Advisory Committee (SMAC) put together a report of guidelines for the FHSAA to follow titled: COVID – 19 Recommendations: Summative Information, July 19, 2020.

The SMAC’s report recommends that high school football (due to its physical contact) and volleyball (due to being played in a small arena) be postponed and monitored every two to three weeks until:

  1. COVID – 19 positive numbers show a downward trajectory of documented cases OR downward trajectory of positive tests as a percent of total tests (flat or increasing volume of tests). OR

Downward trajectory of positive tests as a percent of total tests (flat or increasing volume of tests)

  1. <5% Positive COVID-19 tests for at least 28 days (using 7 day % moving tests).
  2. Require at least 2 weeks of practice before “competition” to allow for appropriate mandatory heat acclimatization measures, re-integration into sport, and to minimize risk of overuse injury.

The FHSAA SMAC does note that team workouts are permitted to continue as long as the conditioning programs follow NFHS’s guidelines.

With this in mind, at the recommendation of the Hernando County School County Athletic Director and with the endorsement of the Athletic Directors at all five county high schools, the following decision was made.

Hernando County Schools’ Fall Athletic programs will continue with volunteer summer conditioning Phase 3, with minor adjustments and will not start fall sports as scheduled on Monday, July 27, 2020.  A fall start date will be determined later, but will be no earlier than Sept 14, 2020.

The dates of Monitoring for decline of state average Positive COVID-19 are to be:

  1. Thursday, August 13, 2020
  2. Thursday, August 27, 2020
  3. Thursday, September 10, 2020

Note: The Fall season for all fall sports may be cancelled if after multiple checks the FHSAA SMAC recommendations are not met.

Furthermore, the members of the Gulf Coast 8 Athletic Conference have determined that fall contests, should they be approved, will only take place between the eight conference schools for all fall sports.  Alternate schedules are being developed and will be shared with head coaches for their sports shortly.

All coaches will be required to wear face covering at all times during all on campus activities.
