Varsity Football · Leopards Start Slow, Finish Strong

The Hernando Leopard football team got off to a slow start against the much improved Lecanto Panthers in the season final. The Leopards went in to halftime down 8-0 to the Panthers.  After making some halftime adjustments, the Purple and Gold came out in the second half to score 26 unanswered points in their 26-8 win to improve their record to 5-1 heading into the state play-offs.  The Leopards will travel to Tarpon Springs on Friday, November 13th to take on the Spongers.  Tickets must be purchased on

The Leopards were once again led by their defense and the running game, led by Contae Cason.  Coach Earl Garcia III was happy with the win despite the sluggish start to the game. ” The first half we were counting electoral ballots from Pennsylvania.  The second half we found out a football game was taking place and decided to join in.  Contae and the offensive line turned it up and the defense held strong. Good game for us to pull out going into the play-offs.”

Cason had over 200 yards rushing on the night with a touchdown run and also caught a 65 yard touchdown pass on 3rd and long from Dom Bowers, who also had a touchdown run and over 100 yards passing.  KeVon Williams also had a touchdown run on the night for the Leopards.  Anthony Talpa led the way with 15 tackles, including 13 that were solo. Sam Sternberger continued his standout play with 14 tackles. Shawn Bingham Jr. had 11 tackles on the night.  Defensive Back James Perkins added a pick for the Purple and Gold.
