The Leopard athletic department has had a successful week as the Purple and Gold continue to participate in the state series in many sports. Last week, the girls softball team continued their strong play as they defeated Wesley Chapel to win the district championship. With the win, the Lady Leopards will host Tarpon Springs in the FHSAA regional semi-final on Wednesday, May 5th at 7 PM at Tom Varn Park. Cost of admission is $7. The Hernando baseball team lost a heartbreaker to Nature Coast 9-8 in the district championship. Because of the loss, the Leopards will travel to Rockledge to play Thursday, May 6th at 7 PM in the FHSAA regional semi-final. Cost of admission is $7. The girls tennis team had a very successful season as the made it to the FHSAA regional finals before losing to Gainesville Eastside. Breane Carter and Margaret Steinkamp mad it to the State Sweet 16 as doubles. The Lady Leopards were district champs and had an outstanding year.
The track team had a successful day at the regional track meet. The Leopards had several that advanced to FHSAA state championship next week at University of North Florida in Jacksonville. Justin Fabela broke a school record by running a 49.66 in the 400 meter dash. Fabela placed third to advance to states. Devin Williams placed second (shot put) and third (discus) to advance to state. Bri Mobley advanced in the shot put placing third. A’Reginae White ran a personal best 12.22 in the 100 meter dash to place third. White was .01 seconds from placing first. White, Sy Crowley, Tania Holland and Shanyea Rayford placed second to advance with a season best 49.20 in the 4×100 relay. The state championships will be held Saturday morning at UNF.
